Warmoesstraat

Warmoes is an early medieval word for a vegetable. A vegetable market used to be held here. The Warmoesstraat used to be an aristocratic street with dignified shops. In the 18th century it became the center of the trade in coffee and tea. Nowadays this busy street locates various shops, restaurants, lunchrooms, cafés, bars, clubs and hotels. The gay scene is located here, too, with shops, cafés and bars that can be identified by the rainbow and the black and blue striped flags. The rainbow flag means: gay welcome and the black and blue striped flag is especially meant for the leather scene. In this street, a number of historical buildings have been restored, for example the house called In het Paradijs (In Paradise) at number 148, which used to be one of the most beautiful houses in the city.
