Sint Antoniesbreestraat

Originally, the Sint Antoniesbreestraat was a dike (Sint Antoniesdijk), an extension of the Zeedijk. You can find many specialty shops under the arcades. The second part of the street was called Jodenbreestraat from the 17th century on, due to its many Jewish inhabitants that came to Amsterdam. The most historical building is the House De Pinto at number 69. This house was built in 1680 for the family De Pinto, a wealthy Portugese-jewish group of merchants and bankers. Nowadays, the public library is located here. Come inside and have a look at the beautiful paintings on the ceiling of this former merchant’s house.
